What alternative views are there?
What are the advantages/disadvantages in thinking like this?
Does it help me move towards my goals?
Am I over generalising?
Am I taking things to personally?
Am I being excessively pessimistic about the future?
Am I forgetting my strengths and concentrating on my weaknesses?

Effective Techniques for Reducing Depression -
Make a list of five of your best attributes
Make a list of five achievements you are most proud of
Read the above two lists when you feel dispirited
Ask friends to stop you rehearsing negative life events in conversation. Instead, concentrate on talking about pleasant past/future events
Make a list of happy thoughts and experiences (however small) that happen each day
Keep yourself busy by doing constructive things. Reward yourself by doing something pleasurable
Give yourself credit for your efforts. Remember, it takes greater effort to do things when you are depressed
